Self-publishing your book is one thing; selling it is another. Finding your readers and generating buzz and demand for your book is a significant challenge, but it’s not impossible.

John Birmingham, Ned Manning and Nicole Webb have all self-published to great success - in this session they will share how they get their books noticed and into the hands of readers.

Whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction, if you’re self-publishing don’t miss this essential information session. You will learn how to:

  • find your readers and engage with them
  • drum up publicity in the media
  • get your book in the right hands to be reviewed
  • get booked for live events and festivals
  • work out who the important people are to have in your corner

There will be time for questions.

A private link of the session recording will be provided to enrolled participants only and available for a limited period of 10 days. Once the viewing period has expired the recording will no longer be available to view.

Handouts and slides will be provided to all registered participants if used in the session.

Presenter bios:

John Birmingham is an British-Australian author. Birmingham was born in Liverpool UK and migrated to Australia with his parents in 1970. He grew up in Ipswich, Queensland. His only stint of full time employment was as a researcher at the Defence Department. After this he returned to Queensland to study law but he did not complete his legal studies, choosing instead to pursue a career as a writer. He currently lives in Brisbane.

Ned Manning is the author of several plays written for both young people and adult audiences, including ‘Alice Dreaming’ and ‘Us or Them’. Ned is also the author of the entertaining teaching memoir ‘Playground Duty’ and his debut novel ‘Painting the Light’.

Outside of writing Ned has performed in many of Australia’s best loved Films, TV productions and Plays, such as cult favourite ‘Dead-In Drive In’ and ‘Looking for Alibrandi’.

For several decades Ned has worked as an educator and advocate for teachers, speaking strongly in defence of pay and the need to better support our teachers. Ned has also produced several teaching resources, including ‘Shakespeare for Australian Schools’ as well as ‘Alice Dreaming’

Nicole Webb spent 20 years in Australian television working as a Reporter, Producer and Presenter. Nicole and her hotelier husband moved to Hong Kong in 2010 before moving to Xi’an, Northwest China in 2014. Returning to Sydney in 2017, Nicole continued to work as a Media Specialist, and in 2020 published her memoir ‘China Blonde’. China Blonde has been featured in the Australian Financial Review and Sunday Life, among others.

Now based in Singapore, Nicole is continuing her work in media and communications across Asia Pacific.

Nicole has curated 20 author media campaigns which include renowned philosopher and philanthropist Peter Singer and his charity and book of the same name, ‘The Life You Can Save’ — New York Times /Hollywood bestselling crime writer Don Winslow and author of ‘Secrets Beyond the Screen’ veteran broadcast producer and women’s advocate, Anita Jacoby.

Nicole's authors have been featured in: The Australian Women's Weekly, The Guardian, The Weekend Fin Review, Domain magazine, Today Show, ABC Breakfast TV, ABC radio Conversations, ABC Radio Evenings, Sky News Australia, Sarah Grynberg's podcast, A Life of Greatness, 9 Honey, Body + Soul, That's Life magazine.
