Do you want an overseas agent but aren’t sure how to find one?
One way for authors to break into international publishing markets is to have an overseas agent who can use their local expertise to find the right home for your work. In some cases it can be the first step to publication and lead to international success and in others having the right agent can open whole new markets. How do you know if an overseas agent is right for you and your work, and how do you find the right one in the right country?
Authors Chris Hammer, Garth Nix, and Brooke Robinson, will answer your questions and share:

Chris Hammer is a leading Australian crime fiction author. His books have been praised for their sense of place, their intricate plots, their colourful characters and their emotional depth. His first book, Scrublands, was an instant number one bestseller when it was published in 2018. It won the prestigious UK Crime Writers Association New Blood Dagger for the best debut crime novel. Scrublands has been sold into translation in several foreign languages and is being produced for television, with an on-air date in late 2023. His follow up books also featuring journalist Martin Scarsden – Silver (2019) and Trust (2020) are also bestsellers and have been shortlisted for major literary prizes. Chris started a new series in 2020 with Treasure & Dirt, featuring homicide detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan. This was followed last October with The Tilt, also featuring Ivan and Nell. Chris’s new Ivan and Nell book, The Seven, will be published this coming October.
Garth Nix has been a full-time writer since 2001, but has also worked as a literary agent, marketing consultant, book editor, book publicist, book sales representative, bookseller, and as a part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve. More than six million copies of Garth’s books have been sold around the world, they have appeared on the bestseller lists of The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, The Bookseller and others; and his work has been translated into 42 languages. He has won multiple Aurealis Awards, the ABIA Award, Ditmar Award, the Mythopoeic Award, CBCA Honour Book, and has been shortlisted for the Locus Awards, the Shirley Jackson Award and others.
Brooke Robinson is a writer from Western Sydney. As a playwright, she won the 2020 Lysicrates Prize for drama and her plays have been produced by companies including Griffin Theatre and Campbelltown Arts Centre. Her debut novel, The Interpreter, was published in 2023 as a lead title with Vintage/Harvill Secker in the UK and Commonwealth. It's published by HarperCollins in the USA and is translated into German, Italian, Czech and Russian. Screen rights have been sold to Hollywood. Her second novel, The Negotiator, is published in 2024.
