The Writers Benevolent Fund was established on the initiative of the late Nancy Keesing, Australian poet and author. Nancy was a staunch ASA member and a trust to assist writers in financial need was established in 1981 with her generous founding donation of $5000.
The current trustees are Edmund Campion, Michael Frankel, Roger McDonald, Lynne Spender and Meg Stewart. Patrons are Pauline Griffin and Helen Garner.
Over the years, the Fund has accumulated capital from donations received. Capital is invested in approved trustee securities and grants are paid out from interest earned.
The Fund has been able to distribute grants to authors finding themselves in financial difficulties as a result of a sudden illness, accident or disability. It has paid for nursing home costs, wheelchair expenses and assistance with funeral expenses. The Fund has provided support to members affected by floods and bushfires.
ASA members requesting assistance can complete an application form providing details of their financial situation and reasons for seeking help.

The Benevolent Fund always needs to increase its small capital base. Donations are tax deductible.
