ASA Mentorship Program

Mentee Application Form

The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) offers all published and unpublished writers and picture book illustrators with a work-in-progress, the opportunity to work with one of our mentors who will help develop their work by providing support, feedback and guidance.

Creators work closely with their chosen mentor for a set number of hours within a particular time period.

NB. Reading time must be included. A rough indication of reading time is 10K words three hours, 35K words eight hours, 70K words + sixteen hours. Manuscripts over 100K words will require a very lengthy reading time. If your manuscript is longer than 100K words, please contact the office to discuss whether a mentorship would be appropriate.

Please attach the following documents in Word Document format:

1. Write a one-page (maximum 300 words) synopsis to help the mentor understand more about your work in progress.

2. Prepare a one-page (maximum 300 words) statement describing what stage your work is up to and what you are hoping to achieve through the mentorship, along with any specific concerns on which you would like to focus.

3. A short literary CV (maximum 150 words) outlining recent achievements or experiences, including whether or not you have previously undertaken a mentorship or worked with an editor.

By submitting this form, you are agreeing with these Terms and Conditions:

1. Discussion with your Mentor may take place in person and/or via phone, Skype and email. If in person, this must not be in the home or workplace of either the Mentor or Mentee.

2. You will do your best to complete your mentorship within the agreed time, or discuss and agree a revised timetable with your Mentor and the ASA.

3. Payment is to be made in advance, as per the option selected.

4. Mentoring helps creators improve their work, not secure publication. Mentors do not provide referrals to publishers or agents as part of this program.

5. A short survey form is to be completed at the end of the mentorship.
