ASA announces recipients of Takeaway Creatives Grants

The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) is pleased to announce the 14 recipients of the $1000 Takeaway Creatives Grants:

The successful applicants clearly demonstrated they have a solid plan, with impressive skills and insights which will be invaluable online to schools, libraries and festivals. 

Following the implementation of COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, the ASA wished to help authors and illustrators pivot to online appearances at schools, libraries and festivals. After the relaxation of social distancing, online appearances are likely to continue as we adapt to an increasingly digital world.

Thanks to the generosity of the Australia Council for the Arts, the ASA received funding to host a free online series, Authors Online: How to Run Virtual Appearances, and to offer Takeaway Creatives Grants: $1000 grants for 14 individual creators to set themselves up for virtual appearances. These grants can be used to develop high quality digital assets or to meet the cost of purchasing new equipment. 

There was an enormous response to this initiative, with over 350 authors and illustrators registering for Authors Online. We appreciate the assistance of author Deborah Abela for sharing and presenting her excellent knowledge of impactful online presentations in the Authors Online series.

Additionally, over 90 high quality applications were received for the Takeaway Creatives Grants. 

Our Professional Development and Events Manager, Jodie Spiteri-James said: “The impact on the businesses of authors and illustrators brought on by the pandemic is profound and far-reaching. They have all had to deal with learning new skills, sourcing new equipment and strategising a new way forward. We would dearly love to have passed on a grant to all applicants. Congratulations to the recipients.”
