Over the past few weeks we have been struck by the groundswell of concern about the sustainability of writing careers in Australia, and the high number of writers and illustrators speaking out about all the challenges authors face to earn a living.
Not only are we thankful to the writers and illustrators who assisted us in preparing our submission to the Federal Inquiry, but also to the many authors who made their own submissions. In particular, we were buoyed to see Helen Garner, Catriona Menzies-Pike, Christos Tsiolkas, and Charlotte Wood appear at the first public hearing before the Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts to make impassioned pleas for better Government funding and support for the next generation of Australian writers.
We ask our members to join in these conversations and to continue the call for action from Government: read the eloquent submissions from your fellow authors, contribute to the ongoing discussion, share the news with your network, contact the media, and write a letter to your local MP voicing your concerns.
Read the submissions on the Inquiry website here. And, read the ASA submission to the Federal Inquiry here.
