This agreement is appropriate for the following circumstances:

• An author has decided to self-publish a book and is commissioning an illustrator to create illustrations for the book in return for a fee.
• The illustrator is providing illustrations as an “artist for hire” and will be paid a one-off payment rather than ongoing royalties. The only possible further payment to the illustrator is the ‘Additional Fee’, payable in circumstances where the Work is published and sells well.
• Copyright in the illustrations will be assigned (transferred) to the author. This means the author will own copyright in the illustrations going forward. The illustrator will have no ongoing interest in the illustrations.
