This agreement is appropriate for the following circumstances:

• An author has decided to self-publish a book and is commissioning an illustrator to create illustrations for the book in return for a licence fee. This fee may be paid upfront as a one-off payment or in instalments.
• Copyright in the illustrations will be exclusively licensed to the author for a defined term, in a defined territory, for publication in defined formats.
• At the expiry of the agreed term, if the author wants to continue to use the illustrations, the author must re-licence them from the illustrator and pay the licence fee again (or any agreed variation of the fee).
