Mentorships for Illustrators

Illustrators can take up two types of mentorships: A portfolio consultation or a picture book flatplan consultation. Please see details for each below.

Portfolio Mentorship

Create a portfolio that sets you apart

A three-hour consultation on your portfolio includes: assessment time and feedback – either by phone, Skype or as a written report.

Members: $365 inc gst

Non Members: $555 inc gst

Having a portfolio is vital for not only representing who you are as an artist, but a key way of putting your work in front of art directors or people commissioning work. Working with an experienced illustrator or art director, a portfolio review can help you determine the number of pages you need, which work to include, how to order it so it tells a virtual story, demonstrate character development, drawing subjects in the area you are seeking work in, the right balance of b&w and colour, how to showcase your best skills, what people are looking for and what to avoid.

Mentors can also discuss practical elements such as: sending your pdfs to publishers, reducing pdf files without losing quality, reproducing your work, getting postcards, flyers made, presenting your work professionally.

Please note: This mentorship does not provide detailed edit notes or offer introductions or recommendations to publishers or agents.

To apply, make payment here, select your mentor from the mentor’s register and then submit your application form.

Picture Book Mentorship

Developing your Picture Book Dummy

A three-hour consultation on your picture book flatplan includes: assessment time and feedback – either verbally by phone or Skype or as a written report.

Members: $365 inc gst

Non Members: $555 inc gst

Submissions can be author/illustrator or an illustrator working with a writer. However both people must be members. The submission must have reached first draft stage at least.

Developing a picture book idea requires a great deal of thought to create a story idea that is strong and clear enough to appeal to young readers with a synergy between text and image. Your mentor can help you with suitability of the idea for the market, engaging young children, character arcs, developing a strong narrative with words and illustrations working in sync.

Please note: This mentorship does not provide detailed edit notes or offer introductions or recommendations to publishers or agents.

To apply, download and fill in the blank 32pp flatplan, and write a 500-word max. synopsis. Make payment and submit the application form
